I transcribed my mom’s journal recently
A few layers of confusion were peeled away
I got to catch a glimpse of her childhood
Carefree in spirit
But teatheted to the farm by daily chores
Little talk of play but much discussion of work
The seasons and weather influenced her time and activities
Yet happiness rang through the words to weave a life of satisfaction
Adulthood brought “courting” and thoughts of an independent life
When marriage quickly brought children, daydreams became reality
Tough days filled with challenges to survive
She became a champion of motherhood and long hard days
She loved a complicated man who loved her back but didn’t always show it
He didn’t know how
But it worked for them
Until her sacrifices and caring for others consumed her soul
Until she asked me to help her find it
She gifted me by waving bye
In a vapor signal with her last breath
I saw
I learned
I honor
